Opportunity Class (OC)
Opportunity classes cater for High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) students who may otherwise be without sufficient classmates at their own academic and social level. Students sit a placement test and if successful will usually have to leave their current school to enrol in an opportunity class for Years 5 and 6. Opportunity classes are part of the department’s offerings for High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) students providing:
- specialist school settings that cater to their intellectual ability
- classes with peers who have similar academic ability and
- an environment that supports their emotional wellbeing and social development
If your child is advised of placement in our Opportunity Class by the Selective Schools Unit, when you have accepted the offer, our school will be in contact you on how to enrol in our school.
Support Unit
Mona Vale PS hosts three support classes for students with a diagnoses disability. We cater for students with Autism Spectrum Disorder and/or moderate intellectual disability. If your child is placed in a support class, they will have the same opportunity as students in mainstream classes to participate in the school’s and community activities, such as school sports and assemblies.
They will have access to:
- support teachers transition
- the same specialist provisions as those available to students in mainstream classes, including disability provisions from the NESA for practical support in examinations
- transport assistance under the Assisted School Travel Program, if they are eligible.
If your child has secured a place in our Support Unit, we will work with your current school to create a transition plan and assist you to facilitate enrolment at our school.
Our office staff are here to help, so contact us if you have any questions.
School contributions
In NSW public schools, all financial contributions are voluntary. Every student has full access to the curriculum, regardless of whether contributions are made.
