Learning

At Mona Vale PS, learning is active, purposeful and centred on the whole child. We encourage our students to show up with confidence, aim high and keep going when learning feels challenging. Our classrooms use an explicit teaching approach, where teachers explain what students are learning and why it matters. Students are guided step by step from teacher modelling to supported practice, and then to working independently, so every child knows how to be successful.

What students learn

Students learn a wide range of subjects in the NSW curriculum. They build skills, think creatively and prepare for life beyond school.

English
The English curriculum helps students build strong foundations in speaking, listening, reading and writing, while also developing a love of literature from the early years through to upper primary. Learning is carefully structured so skills grow and connect across key areas such as vocabulary, reading comprehension, spelling and writing, with teaching guided by each child’s needs. By making clear links between understanding texts and creating texts, students are supported to become confident communicators and thoughtful, capable learners.
Mathematics
The mathematics curriculum supports students to develop strong skills in number, measurement, space and data, while also learning how to think critically and solve real-world problems. Children are encouraged to explain their thinking, use a variety of strategies, and make connections between mathematical ideas as they grow in confidence and understanding. Learning is flexible and responsive to students’ needs, ensuring all learners are supported and challenged at their point of development.
Human Society and its Environment
The HSIE curriculum helps students understand people, places and the past through Geography and History, while developing skills to investigate, think critically and make sense of the world around them. Students learn through stories, sources, data and real-world connections, with a strong focus on respectful understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures. Vocabulary and knowledge-building are woven across learning to help students explain their thinking, deepen understanding and confidently communicate their ideas.
Science and Technology
The Science and Technology curriculum encourages students to be curious, ask questions, explore how the world works and design creative solutions to real-life problems. Children learn through hands-on investigations, building knowledge about the natural and made world while developing skills in thinking, questioning, designing and using digital technologies. Strong links to writing and vocabulary help students explain their ideas clearly, deepen understanding and share their learning with confidence.
Creative Arts
The Creative Arts curriculum gives students rich opportunities to express ideas, feelings and stories through Dance, Drama, Music and Visual Arts. Children learn by making, performing and appreciating creative works, building confidence, imagination and practical skills across a wide range of artistic experiences. By exploring different cultures, styles and forms of expression, students develop creativity, communication skills and a deeper understanding of themselves and the world around them.
Personal Development, Health and Physical Education
The PDHPE curriculum supports students to build healthy, active and positive lives by developing movement skills, understanding wellbeing, forming respectful relationships and strengthening personal and social skills. Children learn how to care for their bodies, manage emotions, stay safe and work confidently with others through both practical physical activity and classroom learning. Schools tailor learning to meet the needs of their students, helping every child grow in confidence, resilience and wellbeing.
Excursion and Incursions
Curriculum-linked incursions and excursions extend classroom learning through real-world experiences. Students engage in a wide range of academic, creative and wellbeing-focused experiences that enrich learning, build understanding and support deeper connections to the curriculum.
Religion and Ethics

At our school, families may choose for their child to participate in Special Religious Education (SRE) or Special Education in Ethics (SEE) where these programs are available and delivered by approved providers. When enrolling, you can select from the approved options offered at our school, and students who do not attend SRE or SEE will take part in supervised, meaningful alternative learning activities. You may change your preference at any time by notifying the school in writing or using the online form where available.

Catholic SRE (Scripture) lessons include activities that are fun, engaging and inclusive for students, whilst also providing students with the opportunity to critically explore their faith and beliefs, and to pray and reflect.

Anglican SRE - The Christian Education Program (CEP) curriculum seeks, with SRE teachers from local churches, to broaden each student’s education by exploring the bible and helping them develop their understanding and knowledge of biblical principles, to build skills which will enhance their overall learning ability and to form an understanding of values and attitudes of faith, culture and what is means to be a Christian in the world today.

Special Education in Ethics classes support children to develop a life-long capacity for making well-reasoned decisions about ethical issues.

Jewish SRE is provided by the NSW Board of Jewish Education (BJE). All teachers undergo a selection process and are trained in the professional delivery of the curriculum and in classroom management.

The curriculum is developed by BJE's professionally trained educators taking childhood development milestones into account. Focusing initially on Jewish festivals, the curriculum explores a wide range of Jewish values, ethics and traditions keeping a balanced perspective through engaging and thought-provoking activities. Students are encouraged to think critically, and share their insights, value their Jewish heritage whilst respecting others, and aspire to participate in the Jewish and Australian communities.
