Stories and highlights
There's always something to celebrate at Mona Vale Public School! From exciting events to proud moments and everyday wins, here are some of our highlights.
Whole School
Our school community comes together multiple times a year for significant events.
So far this year, our students have commemorated Anzac Day, celebrated our mums (and mother-figures) for Mother's Day and recognised students at our termly Honour Assembly. We all enjoyed our Harmony Day celebration where students made flags to represent the nation(s) of their family, dressed in their national dress and enjoyed an around the world feast!
Learning-focused
Each grade plans excursions based on the curriculum. Year 2 have visited the Mona Vale War Memorial as part of their Anzac Day learning, as well as Mona Vale library, Year 3 went to the Aquarium, Year 5 visited the Botanic Gardens as part of their science unit. Year 6 walked down to the Warriewood Wetlands to learn about an important ecosystem right here in our backyard! All grades attend at least one excursion each year.
In addition, we have provided further opportunities for students to attend: The Sydney Writer's Festival, compete in Debating, present their speeches as part of the Multicultural Public Speaking Competition and compete in the Spelling Bee.
Creative and Performing Arts
So far this year, students have performed as part of the mass choir at Pulse Alive; our school band and strings ensemble have played at the Northern Beaches Instrumental Festival and our choir is getting ready to perform at the Festival of Choral Music at the Opera House.
The senior, junior and boys dance groups perform in Term 2 at the Sydney North Dance Festival. Year 5 students have enjoyed their DanceSport lessons in Term 2.
Our infants dance group has been busy rehearsing for their performances later in the year.
Students have also entered the Operation Art competition where two talented MVPS students had their artworks selected for display at the Art Space Gallery in Chatswood alongside artworks from other students across the region.
Sporting
Mona Vale PS runs four carnivals a year: a swimming carnival; cross-country and athletics carnival for students turning 8 years of age (in the current year) and an awesome K-2 Athletics Carnival at Pittwater HS.
Year 1 and 2 students also participated in an AFL skills clinic run by the AFL Development Team.
Our school participates in the Pittwater Interschools Sporting Competition, where teams compete against local schools in a range of winter and summer sports.
In addition, our students enjoy competing at the Zone carnivals for Swimming, Cross Country and Athletics with talented students going on to represent at Regional and State carnivals.
We also compete in the State Sports Knockout with great success. Last year, our Senior Softball team was the state champion!
Social and community-focused
Mona Vale students develop a strong sense of belonging and sense of community.
The Year 6 school leaders have represented our school at the Pittwater RSL Anzac Day and Purple Poppy services,
We have a dedicated team, Kids Ambassadors, who work together to raise awareness of issues they feel passionate about. Two leaders of this team attend meetings each term as part of School Aid's Kids Ambassador Team. They even visited Admiralty House to be presented with certificates by the Governor General.
The Eco Warriors team keeps our school's sustainability focus on-track through their kitchen garden program and recycling initiatives.
Year 5 and 6 students attend a three day camp, where they enhance their teamwork, attack challenges and practice independence. This year, Year 5 will attend Narrabeen Sport and Rec camp, whilst Year 6 thoroughly enjoyed the Great Aussie Bush Camp in Term 1.
“The positive environment, dedicated teachers and wide range of opportunities at the school have helped my child grow in confidence and love learning.”— a parent of Mona Vale Public School
